TSDP is all about player development, it is NOT about games or game time. Training is the focus of our program, games are not guaranteed and the number of games each year depends on each sport, the type of competition and the age group our school is competing in. Game time in most cases, will not be equal. As a Sports High School we play at a high level and team selection or game time is not guaranteed.

• Who is in charge of TSDP?
  Amy Child is the main point of contact and oversees all the sports programs. Director of Sport - Amy Child

• Who are the coaches?
  All our coaches are fully qualified and highly experienced. Some sports have external coaches, other sports have teachers as the coach. We also have Sports Trainer/Strappers available for all sports. Coaches provide progress reports to parents throughout the year.

• Will my child miss class for TSDP?
  No. Your child attends the same number of hours as any other student in any other school.  TSDP as an elective subject, training occurs during elective clas time, sport time or before school.

• My child will be away from school at a sporting event – what do I do?
  Inform the school with as much notice as possible. Work can be arranged for the time of absence. Students have access to Learning Centre to assist with catching up on work or for extra tutoring.

• How does my child catch up missed school work if they are away for games or competitions?
  ISHS has several teachers acting as Academic Mentors who have been allocated time to assist students with catching up on schoolwork missed. A Learning Centre operates in conjuction with the Learning Support Faculty. Although students are ultimately responsible for catching up work, teaching staff are supportive and allow extra time to complete assessments.

• Is there a Program cost ?
  Yes. TSDP is a user pays program with fees used to pay coaches, purchase training gear, pay for venues, referees, and so on. The annual fee ranges from $650 to $1200, plus transport costs for various competitions and events. Fees are payable in installments.

• How do I apply?
  Year 6 trials are held twice a year. Students who are selected will then be sent an application pack. Students currently in years 7 to 12 must complete an application form, attend a trial and have an interview with the Director of Sport and the Deputy Principal.

• I'm not in a rep team – does that matter?
  Students need to demonstrate sporting potential, ‘coachability' and the right attitude. Students are not required to be superstars at age 11! In fact TSDP helps many students gain selection into local representative teams through the extra training and fitness sessions they do at school. However there is a basic level of fitness and skill ability as well as specific sporting criteria to meet. Students must be currently enrolled in a local community or representative club for the sport they are trialing for.

• What are the expectations of TSDP?

  • Attend all training sessions and be prepared. Bring a note if injured.
  • Wear full school uniform.
  • Participate in school carnivals.
  • Maintain excellent attendance.
  • Maintain a high standard of academic achievement and behaviour.

• I live out of area, how do I get to school?

  • Normal Illawarra Premier service buses run for the majority of our students.
  • Students who live in the northern suburbs (Helensburgh to Coniston) catch the train to Cringila Station, then Premier Illawarra run a school shuttle bus service to school.
  • Students who live on the west side of Lake Illawarra (Kiama to Albion Park) catch the train and a bus to school.
  • Students need a School Opal card for free travel. The opal card must be with the student at all times while travelling. Apply for your card online.

• How many students are in the sports program?
  420+ students are involved from year 7 to 12.

• Is there a Gifted and Talented class?
  Yes. Sport students are able to qualify for the STRIVE class (Targeted Academic Program) class for gifted students.
