The schools Careers website is a particularly useful one stop shop for all Careers information and provides support for students writing resumes, cover letters, to research their career options and to assist with work experience opportunities.
The careers office is located in the library, turn right as soon as you walk into the main entrance. The careers office is normally open every day. Illawarra Sports High School provides students and their families with a comprehensive support and resource careers centre. The aim of the Careers office is to assist with examining options to assist with a positive transition from school to work, or from school to a relevant post school education/training destinations.
Students are provided with the very latest information about courses, training options, employment, labour market trends, group training companies, university and TAFE entrance, scholarships, alternative entry pathways, private training providers, group training providers, group training companies, student fees, how to apply for a job, how best to document employment related skills, apprenticeships, traineeships, interview preparation etc.
Every student is treated individually and given the opportunity to create individual career plans.
All students in years 10, 11 and 12 are strongly encouraged to meet with the Careers Adviser at least once a year in order to discuss their career options and to formulate a plan for their future. Making an appointment is easy - just come to the Careers office and put your name in the Student Booking diary at a time that suits you.
Students are encouraged to talk with the Careers Adviser to seek help with subject selection so that subjects studied at school will best prepare students for post school course options.

The careers office can assist with organising access to a large range of courses;
Courses include Work CoverTM accredited; Building and Construction; Work Health and Safety Induction Certificate; Responsible Service of Alcohol; Responsible Conduct of Gambling; Basic Bar Operations; Senior First Aid and Barista Skills Courses.
The Careers Office organises many visits from training providers to come to the school to speak to students about their products and services. Regular speakers include Illawarra TAFE, Illawarra Group Training, Defence Force Recruiting, University of Wollongong, industry representatives and other private training organisations.
We have very strong links with many of the major universities and we are able to provide detailed advice about universities, University Admission Index (UAI), campuses, courses on offer, entry requirements, alternate pathways into universities and costs.
Similarly we have very strong links with the TAFE and the various campuses that make up the Illawarra Institute. The Careers Office can provide support for students exploring their TAFE options, advice on entry into both application courses and enrolment courses.
The careers office is also responsible for the organisation of a range of excursions to industry, careers focused workshops and presentations, universities and training organisations. We try to cater for all students needs and interests. While large group excursions are regularly organised, students and parents are encouraged to make contact with the Careers Office to see if excursions can be organised to places of interest for smaller groups as well (eg industry visits, university campus tours, expos and other careers related workshops.
Apart from trying hard to keep students up to date with the latest employment opportunities, Iris Org students are provided with detailed support in the preparation of job applications. Students can seek assistance with how to write cover letters, use the internet for job searching and careers information, create resumes, prepare for interviews etc.
The Careers office is always trying hard to create and strengthen partnerships with industry so that our students may benefit from our associations. Through these partnerships our students are actively encouraged to become involved with a variety of work experience programs that are available through the office. These work experience programs can be tailored to suit the individual needs of students and industry.
School Based Traineeships and Apprenticeships
The Careers Office also administers School Based Traineeships and Apprenticeships (SBATs). SBATs enable students to gain industry recognised qualifications, while working in a paid part time job while at the same time undertaking their HSC and having the training they are doing count towards their HSC. If there are any students undertaking a SBAT all they need to do is make contact with the Careers Adviser.
Ongoing Information and Communications
The Careers Office and Illawarra Sports High School pays annual subscriptions so that all students and parents can become members and access an excellent online Careers website.
